About the St. James Eatontown Medical Equipment Ministry
One of our parishioners, Brian Meagher, was doing volunteer work in an urban setting in northern, NJ. Brian met an unhoused man who lives in a motorized wheelchair because he is missing both legs below the knee. The man was having battery related troubles with the chair and Brian, a retired engineer, wanted to help fix the equipment. Brian learned about the Pluckemin Medical Equipment Ministry (MEM), (https://ppcmem.org/) which is run from the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church. He was able to obtain a newer, better, motorized chair at no cost. Brian delivered the chair and witnessed the immediate impact the new chair had on the quality of the man’s life. It was a joyful and emotional experience for everyone involved, including the man’s friends, and volunteers and associates who work in their community.
Brian was encouraged by a leader at the MEM (also a retired engineer) to start a MEM at St James and partner with the Pluckemin MEM. Calls to the Monmouth County Offices on Aging, Disabilities, and Veterans Services and the Eatontown EMS validated the community need, since there are only ad hoc local efforts to recycle equipment. The Office on Aging said they receive calls for medical equipment “at least once a week. Maybe more.” They wanted to know when our operation was up and running because they want to refer clients to us.
It should be noted that the Pluckemin MEM came into existence by copying the work of the Emma Davis Medical Equipment Ministry located at the First United Church of Christ in Milford, CT. As the Pluckemin MEM website describes their beginnings “A chance meeting, listening to the will of God, sowing the seed of an idea, nurturing, and growing it.”
This is exactly how the St. James Eatontown Medical Equipment Ministry got started.
We operate with the generous support of Episcopal Community Services of NJ and are affiliated with the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church Medical Equipment Ministry. If you have items to donate, we would love to hear from you, too. We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and your donations are tax deductible.
